The Mets roll into Cincinnati at 31-39 and stuck in last place in the NL East, finishing a Wednesday series with a Reds team that's 33-36 and clinging to the fringe of the NL Central race. Neither side has named a Wednesday starter yet — both clubs were still listing the finale as TBD as of the weekend — so the pitcher card above is the cleanest snapshot you'll get of where the rotations actually stand. The bigger storyline is who's not on the field. Francisco Lindor (calf) is still on the 10-day IL, with David Stearns publicly hoping he's back "this month," while Kodai Senga needs at least one more rehab start before the Mets even consider activating him. Cincinnati's side of the ledger isn't much prettier: Hunter Greene is parked on the 60-day, Emilio Pagan just hit the 15-day with a hamstring, and Elly De La Cruz was working back from his own hamstring strain (90% healed per Terry Francona's last update) with a target of rejoining the lineup for Monday's series opener. For New York, this trip is a chance to bank a road series win against a team they should match up well with. The Mets just took 2 of 3 from the Cardinals before dropping a 3-1 game to Atlanta on Saturday, so the bats have shown signs of life even without Lindor anchoring the top of the order. A getaway-day matinee at Great American Ball Park is exactly the kind of weird spot where a struggling offense can either get well in a hurry or look completely lost — there is no in-between in this park. The Reds are 2-3 over their last 5 and just escaped Arizona with a 2-1 win on Saturday after dropping the opener. Without De La Cruz at full bore and with Ke'Bryan Hayes also on the IL, Francona's been mixing and matching, and the bullpen depth is a real concern with Pagan and Pierce Johnson both shelved. If this turns into a battle of bullpens after the 5th, that's a problem for the home side. Bottom line for Wednesday's finale: two teams that needed to be playing better by mid-June, in a hitter's park, on a quick day game after a night game. Whoever scratches out the early lead probably keeps it.
