The Dodgers already stole game 1 of this series in the Bronx — now they get two more shots at the Yankees in Sunday's doubleheader, with New York down its best player and the AL East race tightening by the day.

The Dodgers own the better overall record here and just went into Yankee Stadium and beat New York in a 1-run game, and now they get two cracks at a Yankees lineup that just lost Aaron Judge for the foreseeable future. Backing Los Angeles's deeper, healthier roster in a getaway doubleheader spot is the sensible straight-up read, even with the Dodgers' own bullpen banged up.
Dodgers
+Best record in the matchup, 62-36
+Won series opener at Yankee Stadium 2-1
+Snapped a 3-game skid heading into NY
−Bullpen thin: Diaz, Snell, Glasnow, Treinen all out
−Catcher Will Smith shut down for the week
−Lost 3 of 4 to Arizona right before this trip
Yankees
+Won 4 straight before dropping series opener
+Still just 2.5 games back in AL East
+Home crowd at Yankee Stadium
−Aaron Judge just moved to 60-day IL
−Rotation down Schmidt, Fried and Rodon
−Stanton still only running, not full activity
Whoever ends up on the mound is walking into a staff that's already stretched thin. The Dodgers are still without Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell and Edwin Diaz, and now Blake Treinen too, while Yankees manager Aaron Boone is patching a rotation missing Clarke Schmidt, Max Fried and Carlos Rodon. Getting through a getaway-day doubleheader with that many gaps to plug is the real challenge for both sides.
The bigger story broke Saturday: the Yankees officially moved Aaron Judge to the 60-day injured list with the rib fracture that's sidelined him since early June, pushing his return well past this series and deeper into a crowded AL East race. New York is already scuffling to replace Giancarlo Stanton's bat, and now the middle of the order is running without its best player indefinitely.

None of that erased the good vibes from New York's 4-game win streak against Tampa Bay and Washington heading into this set, but Los Angeles showed up Friday and took game 1, 2-1, snapping its own 3-game skid against Arizona in the process. Both clubs arrive a little banged up and a little streaky — exactly what makes a getaway-day doubleheader unpredictable.

Dave Roberts is also without his everyday catcher — Will Smith got shut down for the week after his neck flared up again — which adds one more name to a Dodgers injury list that already reads like a taxi squad. On the other side, Boone is still waiting on Stanton, who's only up to running on his injured calf, and on any sign Rodon is close to a mound session. Depth is going to decide this doubleheader as much as anything either staff draws up.

Yankee Stadium still packs in for these matchups no matter who's missing, and there's plenty on the line: Los Angeles keeps chasing its own standard atop baseball, while New York is trying to hang within shouting distance of Tampa Bay in a division that isn't waiting on anybody to get healthy. Game 1 of Sunday's twin bill goes at 12:35 PM ET, with a nightcap on deck right behind it.
