Aaron Donald walked away in March 2024 as a first-ballot Hall of Famer: 3-time Defensive Player of the Year, 8-time All-Pro, 10-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champ. The retirement always had an asterisk attached, though. His 2022 deal, a 3-year, $95 million contract with a $25 million signing bonus, was reportedly structured specifically so he could walk away clean after 2 years without giving back a dime. That's not the contract of a guy who's mentally closed the door forever.
Now the door is creaking back open. Per Ian Rapoport, there's a "real possibility" Donald un-retires to play for the Rams again, with Donald reportedly testing whether he can get back into playing shape before he commits to anything.
The report that kicked off the latest round of Aaron Donald comeback speculation.

This isn't coming out of nowhere, either. It's worth noting the timing lines up with the Rams' trade for Myles Garrett, a move that reportedly got the wheels turning on the idea of Donald suiting back up. Donald has also reportedly been spotted working out at the Rams' facility, running ladder drills, medicine ball throws and agility work, which is exactly the kind of thing you do when you're not fully ready to call it a career.
The stakes here are obvious. Donald was, at his peak, arguably the best defensive player of his generation, a guy who redefined interior pass rushing. If he can actually get back to anywhere close to that level physically, even part-time, the Rams' defensive line instantly becomes scarier than it already is. If he can't, this whole thing quietly fades and he stays retired with his legacy untouched either way.
For now it's all speculation and workout sightings, not a signed contract. But when a reporter as plugged-in as Rapoport says "real possibility," that's not nothing. Rams fans have every reason to keep checking their phones on this one.
