The bullet hit Hardy's upper leg and struck bone, which reportedly made the surgery to repair the damage especially complicated. Three former high school teammates of Hardy's were arrested in connection with the shooting. For a guy who was days away from opening SEC camp as one of the most productive backs in the country, it was a nightmare scenario that had nothing to do with football.
Context matters here because Hardy isn't just a name on a depth chart. He arrived at Louisiana-Monroe as a true freshman in 2024 and immediately led all FBS freshman running backs in rushing yards, racking up 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns en route to Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors. When he transferred to Missouri for the 2025 season, the production didn't just carry over, it exploded. Hardy ran for 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns, finished 2nd nationally in rushing yards per game, and earned consensus All-America recognition.
That's the resume that made the shooting such a gut-punch for Mizzou fans heading into a season with real expectations. Getting medically cleared is a massive step, but it's not the finish line. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz has said the return-to-play protocol could take another 5 to 8 weeks from here, meaning Hardy's availability for the start of the season is still very much up in the air.
Still, clearance is clearance.
