AJ Brown's Patriots debut ends early with ankle injury

This was supposed to be the receiver New England traded a 2028 first-round pick for, finally on the field. Instead, AJ Brown's debut with the Patriots turned into a slow-motion injury scare in real time, tracked tweet by tweet by the beat reporters in the building.

And now Patriots WR AJ Brown is down, took a knee to the ankle from Nehemiah Pritchett going to the turf.
The play itself was almost nothing: Brown going down to try to corral a low ball from Maye, Seahawks corner Nehemiah Pritchett's knee catching his ankle on the way to the turf. Brown had already made his presence felt before that, drawing a pass interference call on an underthrown deep shot that helped set up New England's first touchdown, according to ESPN. Three catches, 26 yards, then gone.
What followed was the familiar rhythm of an NFL sideline injury drip. First questionable to return. Then the walk to the medical tent. Then the walk to the locker room. Then x-rays. Every stage got its own update from a different reporter, which is how you knew this one wasn't shaking off.
By 2:38 a.m. ET, the Patriots made it official: Brown was done for the night, ruled out with the right ankle injury. Field Yates summed up the vibe from press row succinctly — a brutal night for injuries, brutal — and it landed that way for a Patriots offense that just spent a first-round pick, a fifth-rounder and a contract averaging $32 million a year to get a true No. 1 target for Drake Maye.
Context matters here. New England traded for Brown from Philadelphia back on June 1, timing the deal after the new league year so the Eagles could spread his $43.45 million in dead money across two seasons instead of eating it all at once. Part of the pitch for Brown landing in New England was Mike Vrabel, who coached him in Tennessee from 2019 to 2021 — a relationship that reportedly made the Patriots a preferred destination in the first place.
Instead, Brown's first snaps in a Patriots jersey ended with a 13-10 loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks, per ESPN, and an ankle injury that will now shadow the start of a marriage the team just bet a first-round pick on. Nobody's calling this a disaster yet — Brown walked off under his own power and this was strictly an evaluation-and-x-rays situation, not a stretcher. But for an offense that needed its new $32 million receiver healthy to make Maye's job easier, losing him for the rest of the opener is exactly the kind of night nobody in Foxborough wanted.
