Alabama has its guy under center for 2026. Kalen DeBoer named sophomore Keelon Russell the starting quarterback, closing the book on a competition with senior transfer Austin Mack that stretched from spring practice all the way through fall camp.
Russell isn't some mystery box. He was the highest-rated quarterback signee in program history, a five-star who came in as the No. 2 overall player in the 2025 class, ranked ahead of where Bryce Young sat on the recruiting boards coming out of high school. He barely saw the field as a true freshman behind Ty Simpson, but the flashes were real: 11-of-15 passing for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns across 2 appearances, plus 17 rushing yards. That's a razor-thin sample size, but it was apparently enough for the staff to feel good about handing him the offense.

By most accounts the battle was tight. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb reportedly said the staff was close on the call between Russell and Mack, who spent last season as Ty Simpson's backup after transferring in from Washington and appeared in 4 games. In the end it came down to consistency running the offense and Russell's mobility — his ability to extend plays and create outside a clean pocket reportedly won out over Mack's experience.
DeBoer's track record developing quarterbacks matters here too. He's built offenses around what his starter does well rather than forcing a system fit, which is presumably why Russell — a dual-threat guy who can operate outside structure — got the nod over a more traditional pocket option in Mack.
Alabama opens the season ranked No. 13 in the preseason polls and kicks things off at home against East Carolina on September 5. That'll be Russell's first career start, and after a redshirt-adjacent freshman year watching from behind Simpson, the Crimson Tide are betting their season on what he showed in flashes finally translating over a full slate.
