Cal steals nation's top JUCO corner right from Alabama and LSU

Recruiting wins like this don't usually go Cal's way. The Golden Bears just landed Alius Mayo, a 6'4, 190-pound cornerback out of Modesto Junior College who Rivals ranks as the No. 1 JUCO prospect in the entire 2027 class, and they did it by beating out Alabama and LSU head to head.

That's not a typo. Two of the most storied programs in college football history struck out on a corner they clearly wanted, and a school that's been scrapping for national relevance lost it to Berkeley. Mayo's recruitment wasn't limited to Alabama and LSU either — Arizona State, Mississippi State, Louisville and Kentucky were all in the mix at various points, which tells you how loud his tape was to have that many staffs chasing him.

The path here is the fun part. Mayo came out of high school in 2025 with basically one real offer, from Fresno State, and nothing close to blue-blood attention. One year at Modesto Junior College later, he's the top-rated JUCO prospect in the country. In 11 games he racked up 30 tackles, 5 interceptions and 5 pass breakups, numbers that turned a no-star recruit into a guy Alabama and LSU were flying staffers out for.

For Cal, this is exactly the kind of pickup a program needs when it's trying to climb back into relevance in a loaded conference. Mayo is a Stockton native, so keeping him in-state carried real weight, and coach Tosh Lupoi's staff reportedly leaned on that plus a strong NIL package to seal it. He's also not walking into an empty room — Rivals has him joining a defensive back class that already includes four-star corners Kamil Loud and Duvay Williams, which suddenly makes Cal's secondary something to watch in 2027.

Beating Alabama and LSU for anyone is a headline. Beating them for the No. 1 player at his position, with a kid who had one offer a year ago, is the kind of story that gets recruiting Twitter buzzing and gives Cal fans something real to point to heading into the fall.
