Saints RB Alvin Kamara is expected to miss roughly a month with a sprained MCL, throwing New Orleans' backfield plans into flux right before the season opener.

Practice injuries usually mean nothing. Tuesday's did. Alvin Kamara didn't finish a Saints practice session, and what looked at first like a veteran getting held out as a precaution turned into a real problem within a day.

By Wednesday afternoon, ESPN's Adam Schefter had the full picture: Kamara is dealing with a sprained MCL and is expected to be sidelined for at least the next month. That timeline puts New Orleans' regular season opener in real jeopardy, and possibly Week 2 as well, for a running back who's been the engine of that offense for years.

The injury lands at an awkward moment for both player and team. Kamara restructured his deal with New Orleans this offseason, trading a base salary that could've reached $11.5 million for one worth $6 million with incentives up to $8.5 million just to stay in the fold. The Saints also went out and signed Travis Etienne Jr. away from Jacksonville on a 4-year, $52 million contract, giving the backfield a legitimate 1-2 punch on paper heading into 2026.

Now that punch gets thrown one-handed for a while. With Kamara out, the workload shifts squarely onto Etienne, a Louisiana native who signed in part for the chance to play close to home. It's an early opportunity to show he was worth the money, even if it's not the way anyone in New Orleans wanted it to happen.

A month-long absence for a 30-year-old back with Kamara's mileage is the kind of injury that bears watching well past the initial return date. For now, fantasy managers are scrambling and the Saints are left hoping this is the worst of it — a sprain that heals on schedule rather than a preview of something longer.
