Miami just landed another five-star piece for a historic 2027 class

Miami's 2027 recruiting class was already absurd before Thursday. Now it's got another five-star headline name attached to it. Cornerback A'mir Sears announced his commitment to the Hurricanes, and given the timeline on this kid, it's a legitimately wild get.

Context matters here. Sears wasn't even supposed to be a 2027 prospect until recently — he reclassified up from the 2028 class, and immediately slotted in as one of the best players in his new grad year. Rivals has him as the No. 2 cornerback and No. 10 overall recruit in the country nationally, and he's ranked similarly across the other major recruiting services. That's not a guy who reclassified to pad a class. That's a guy who was already the No. 1 overall prospect in 2028 and decided he was ready to compete a year early.

The recruitment itself was a real battle. Sears picked Miami over finalists LSU, Michigan and Texas A&M, after also fielding interest from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Auburn, Florida and Syracuse — basically half the sport's blue bloods were in on him. Miami was reportedly the first program to offer him, back in July 2024, and that early relationship apparently mattered. He's a South Florida kid, a West Broward product, and the hometown pull came through in his comment to Hayes Fawcett about continuing his story in the place he calls home.

Zoom out and this fits a pattern Mario Cristobal has been building for a while now: stack the trenches and the secondary with the state's best talent before anyone else gets a look. Sears now joins a 2027 class that already includes fellow five-star defensive back Donte Wright, receiver Nick Lennear and edge rusher Jaiden Bryant — four five-stars total. It's a class currently ranked No. 3 nationally, and by average rating per commit, reportedly the best in the country pound for pound.
