Miami's 2027 recruiting class was already scary before Friday. Now it has a five-star cornerback who, less than a year ago, wasn't even supposed to be in that class.
Sears reclassified up from the 2028 cycle to 2027 earlier this year, a move that usually costs a recruit stock since he's giving up an extra year of development time against older competition. It didn't. He was the No. 1 or No. 2 overall prospect in the 2028 class before the jump and still landed as a top-10 talent in 2027, keeping his fifth star the whole way through. That's the rare recruit who skips a grade and somehow gets more valuable, not less.
This isn't some kid Miami found in another state, either. Sears plays at Columbus High in the Miami area, and last season helped West Broward reach the Florida 6A state title game as runner-up. The homecoming angle in his comment to Hayes Fawcett, wishing his brother could've seen him get here, tracks with a kid who never really left home to begin with — he's just staying in it for college.
The recruitment wasn't a Miami runaway until it suddenly was. Sears had LSU, Michigan and Texas A&M all in his final mix, three programs with plenty of corner pedigree and NFL pipelines of their own. Losing out on a top-10 overall talent who grew up 20 minutes from campus would've stung for the Hurricanes. Instead they got to keep him in-state.

Mario Cristobal's staff has leaned hard into the idea that Miami shouldn't be losing its own backyard to Ann Arbor or Baton Rouge, and this commitment is the clearest proof yet that the pitch is landing. A five-star defensive back who reclassified specifically to get to campus faster is about as strong a signal of buy-in as a staff can ask for.
The 2027 class is still a long way from signing day, and reclassified prospects have been known to change course more than once given how fluid these commitments get. But for right now, Miami just added a top-10 overall recruit to a class that's shaping up to be one of the best in the country — and did it without having to leave the 305.
