Austria Survives Jordan Scare in Group J Opener

Austria jumped Jordan early, Ali Olwan answered with history, and a VAR handball turned a wild Group J night into the Marko Arnautovic show.

World Cup 2026 group play delivered exactly the kind of late-night chaos you sign up for. Austria came out firing in Group J, Jordan refused to be a tourist, and FS1 viewers got 90 minutes that swung three different directions before the dust settled. If you tuned in expecting a sleepy mismatch, you got punished — in the best way.

Jordan set the tone before kickoff with a walkout that had no business looking that cold.

Then Austria did Austria things. Inside 20 minutes the red shirts cracked the door open with a finish that didn't need a second look — straight rocket, 1-0, and the bench emptied to mob the scorer on the sideline. For about a half hour, this looked like the chalky group-stage night everyone penciled in.

Austria's opener was a clean strike that turned the scoreboard inside the 20th minute.

Jordan had other ideas. Just after the restart, Ali Olwan ripped the equalizer — and not just any equalizer. That's the first World Cup goal in the history of the country, full stop. The corner-flag celebration tells you everything: this was bigger than a single match.

Ali Olwan stamped his name on Jordanian football history with the equalizer.

From there it got messy. Austria thought they had the go-ahead goal in the 70th, only for VAR to drag the booth into a handball review and wipe the 2-1 off the board. Cue the universal soccer experience of celebrating, stopping, then getting told to un-celebrate.

The VAR review erased Austria's go-ahead and reset the night at 1-1.

Ball don't lie. Five minutes later Marko Arnautovic — of course it was Arnautovic — punched the lead right back. The 76th-minute strike gave Austria a 2-1 cushion the legit way and quieted the VAR noise in a hurry. Group J on opening night: chaos, history, and a veteran striker reminding everyone he's still got it.

Arnautovic restored the Austria lead minutes after the VAR overturn.
