The Bears have been quietly building one of the more interesting tight end rooms in the league, and now the newest piece is officially signed. According to Adam Schefter, Chicago locked up rookie tight end Sam Roush on a 4-year, $7.35 million contract, closing the book on his rookie deal before training camp gets rolling.
Bears signed second-round pick, tight end Sam Roush, to his rookie four-year, $7.35 million contract.
Roush comes over from Stanford, where he put together a solid 4-year career, hauling in 119 catches for 1,201 yards and 4 touchdowns across 48 games, capped by a second-team All-ACC season. At 6-foot-6 and 267 pounds, he's got the frame teams covet at the position, and Chicago clearly saw enough to move around the draft board to get him — the Bears reportedly traded down from the 60th pick to grab him at 69th overall, picking up an extra fifth-rounder in the process.
Here's the catch: Roush isn't walking into an empty depth chart. He's stepping into a room with Cole Kmet, a veteran presence at the position, and Colston Loveland, who's entering his second year after being a premium draft investment himself. That makes Roush TE3 out of the gate, which means his path to real snaps runs through special teams and matchup packages before anything bigger opens up.
Still, getting the paperwork done now matters. Rookie contracts dragging into camp create unnecessary distractions and lost reps, and Chicago clearly wanted Roush fully in the fold for his first real look at NFL practice. For a Bears offense trying to figure out its identity around Caleb Williams, adding size and receiving ability at tight end — even in a depth role — gives the coaching staff more to work with.
The real story now shifts to camp. Roush gets to show whether his college production translates against NFL-caliber linebackers and safeties, and whether he can carve out a role behind two established options. Nobody's projecting him for a huge rookie season, but a signed deal means the Bears can start finding out exactly what they've got.
