Notre Dame's 2027 D-line class is getting ridiculous

Notre Dame just won another recruiting battle it didn't need to sweat, but did anyway. Four-star defensive lineman Brayden Parks, a 6'2 (some outlets have him at 6'3), 300-plus-pound run-stuffer out of Chicago's Brother Rice High School, committed to the Fighting Irish over Oregon, closing out a recruitment that had both programs pushing hard down the stretch.

Parks isn't walking into South Bend blind. According to reporting on his recruitment, his training partner is fellow Notre Dame 2027 commit David Folorunsho, and his cousin, Tony Jones Jr., already has ties to the program — so the pipeline here was more than just a coach's cold pitch. Parks checks in as the No. 22 defensive lineman nationally in the 2027 Rivals rankings, and he now becomes commit No. 23 in a Notre Dame class that Rivals already had ranked No. 2 in the country.

What makes this one sting for Oregon specifically is who's doing the recruiting. Charlie Partridge, Notre Dame's defensive line coach, has turned into arguably the most dangerous closer on the Irish's staff, and he's stacking a D-line class that's starting to look historic rather than just good.

That list is absurd for one position group: five-star DL David Folorunsho, five-star EDGE Abraham Sesay, and now Parks, alongside four-stars Aidan O'Neil, Jackson Vaughn and Segun Alexander. Sesay in particular was a get — Notre Dame beat out LSU, Penn State and Florida State for the Pennsylvania pass rusher, and evaluators have him pegged as one of the higher-upside edge prospects in the entire class.

New position coaches usually take a cycle or two to find their footing on the recruiting trail. Partridge is skipping that step entirely. Landing multiple five-stars and now Parks in year one at a position group is the kind of thing that reshapes how a whole class gets ranked, and it fits the bigger-picture story at Notre Dame under Marcus Freeman: a program that's been explicit about wanting to win in the trenches first and build everything else around it.

Parks won't play a snap for another two years, and recruiting rankings are never a guarantee of anything once pads come on. But for a Notre Dame fanbase that's watched the Irish get pushed around up front in big games before, stockpiling this much size and talent on the defensive line is exactly the kind of long-term bet that's supposed to change that. Oregon, for its part, moves on to the next board — but this was a swing they took and missed on.
