Bret Bielema has a type when it comes to quarterbacks, and it starts with a sales pitch he's clearly not tired of running back. According to Pete Nakos, the same recruiting speech that convinced Luke Altmyer to become one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Illinois history is the one Bielema used to land Katin Houser out of the transfer portal this January.
The pitch, per Nakos, is centered on three NFL legends Bielema has coached over his career — a resume flex most college coaches simply don't have. Altmyer bought in when he transferred from Ole Miss, and it worked out. He became a starter who left Illinois after running his eligibility out and entered the 2026 NFL Draft.
Houser isn't your typical portal QB either. He was a 4-star recruit out of St. John Bosco in California who started his career at Michigan State, redshirting in 2022 before playing 11 games there in 2023. He then transferred to East Carolina, where he spent 2 seasons and helped the Pirates to back-to-back 8-win campaigns.
The tape backs up why Illinois went hard after him. Houser threw for 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions in 2025 at ECU, completing better than 65% of his passes while adding 9 rushing scores on the ground. Across his 2 years with the Pirates he put up 5,306 passing yards and 37 total touchdowns.
Houser committed to Illinois on January 5, choosing the Illini over other suitors reportedly including Arkansas, which could sell conference exposure and NIL money of its own. Instead he's betting on Bielema's track record — a coach who has now sent multiple transfer quarterbacks through his program and watched at least one of them, Altmyer, walk out the door as an NFL Draft prospect.
There's a fun wrinkle to the timing, too. Illinois is scheduled to travel to Michigan State in 2026, meaning Houser gets a homecoming game against the program that first recruited him out of high school. For Bielema, it's just the latest proof that the pitch works — find the arm talent, point to the resume, and let the quarterback fill in Altmyer's shoes.
