Cade Marlowe's road back to the big leagues just took another detour. The 29-year-old outfielder signed a minor league deal with the Athletics back in December, and after mashing his way through Triple-A Las Vegas all season, he's exercised the opt-out in that contract and is officially a free agent again.
MLBTradeRumors broke the news that Marlowe has opted out of his Athletics deal.

This isn't Marlowe's first rodeo with roster limbo. He came up through the Mariners system and got a real look in Seattle, but the Mariners designated him for assignment in February 2025 to clear a spot for Jorge Polanco, and he cleared waivers and got sent outright to Tacoma. He bounced around the Mariners' minor league affiliates the rest of that year before signing on with Oakland's org in December.
The opt-out timing is what makes this actually interesting. Marlowe wasn't just hanging around Vegas for depth purposes, he was raking. He's been running a .317/.394/.521 line with a 10.8% walk rate against a 19.9% strikeout rate, good for a 119 wRC+, meaning he's been about 19% better than league-average at the plate. Throw in 24 stolen bases and reps at all three outfield spots, and it's easy to see why he felt he had leverage to test the market rather than wait around in Triple-A for a September call-up that might never come.
Opt-out clauses like this exist specifically for guys in Marlowe's spot, unheralded veterans stuck on minor league deals who need an escape hatch if a contender needs outfield depth in a hurry. And the timing lines up perfectly, with the trade deadline just days away, several contenders are going to be scrambling for cheap, versatile bats who can play all three outfield spots. A .900-plus OPS in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League isn't the whole story, but it's enough to get a phone to ring.
For the Athletics, it's a minor loss, they weren't counting on Marlowe for anything big-league relevant this year anyway. But it's a reminder of how thin the margins are for players on the fringe of a 40-man roster. Marlowe now gets to pick his next landing spot instead of waiting for one, and given how he's hit this season, don't be shocked if a contender scoops him up before the deadline dust settles.
