Miami's receiver room has been a punchline for a while now, but a pair of rookies are quietly changing that story. Adam Schefter flagged both Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell as players poised to have actual roles this season, and the buzz around each of them backs it up.
The Dolphins have two rookie WRs poised to have roles this season: Caleb Douglas, who has impressed in camp, and Chris Bell, who was recently activated off the NFI list.
Douglas, a third-round pick out of Texas Tech at 75th overall, has been one of the standout stories of Dolphins camp. He's 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, and has been catching contested balls all summer -- coach Jeff Hafley singled him out as one of the team's most consistent players, and he's already built chemistry with QB Malik Willis. Douglas was even listed with the starters on Miami's first depth chart, next to Jalen Tolbert and Malik Washington.
That's a fast track for a guy who wasn't a household name in April. Miami's offense has needed size on the outside, and Douglas gives them a different look than the rest of the room -- which is exactly why his camp hype has carried this far into August.
Bell's path has been rougher. The Louisville product -- 151 catches, 2,166 yards, 12 touchdowns and a Biletnikoff semifinalist run in his final college season -- tore his ACL last November, which pushed him onto the non-football injury list to start camp. Getting activated off the NFI list is a real checkpoint, not a formality, and reports have him practicing without the no-contact jersey since. That's the clearest sign yet he's trending toward a Week 1 role against the Raiders.
Put together, it's a receiver room that looked thin on paper suddenly getting real contributors from the same draft class. Neither rookie is guaranteed anything once the games count, but with Schefter -- someone who doesn't hype camp bodies for no reason -- putting both names out there together, Dolphins fans have two new names worth tracking into the regular season.
