Nobody outside the building was projecting him to matter in fantasy this year. Then he went out against Tennessee in the preseason opener and caught 7 passes for 62 yards, becoming, per ESPN, the first rookie in a decade to haul in 7-plus receptions in the first half of his team's opening exhibition game. That's not a name check. That's a statement.
The tape backs up the hype that's been building at camp. Brock Purdy has been raving about how fast Stribling picked up the offense, calling him a guy who "gets the game of football." Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak praised his football acumen, and Kyle Shanahan himself liked how his hands looked and how physically he played. That's a lot of institutional buy-in for a rookie who wasn't drafted to start Week 1. Stribling has reportedly been getting reps with the first, second and third-team offenses, which is coach-speak for "we're throwing him at everything to see what sticks."
The opportunity is real because the 49ers' receiver room got wrecked before the season even started. First-round pick Ricky Pearsall needs season-ending knee surgery, wiping out one of the projected starters outright. Christian Kirk has been dealing with a calf strain that's kept him out of camp reps, opening the door even wider. Mike Evans is the locked-in X receiver, but behind him it's suddenly Stribling, Demarcus Robinson and a bunch of question marks, not the settled depth chart San Francisco thought it had in the spring.
For fantasy purposes, this is the kind of camp arc you draft rookies hoping for. Stribling's ADP was sitting around pick 171 on Underdog before this preseason performance, deep-league sleeper territory. That number is not surviving this news cycle. He's already been described as one of the biggest rookie risers of the summer, and a 7-catch exhibition debut with real starters missing time in front of him is exactly the kind of signal that moves him into the top half of rookie boards and firmly onto the WR3/flex radar in Shanahan's pass-friendly offense.
Don't overreact and pencil him in as a Week 1 lock, though. The realistic projection has him working primarily out of the slot early, fighting for targets rather than commanding them, with some analysts pegging his first real fantasy relevance closer to the back end of the first quarter of the season rather than opening weekend. That's a normal rookie receiver arc, especially one who came out of three different college programs (Washington State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss) and is still building chemistry with Purdy in a scheme that asks a lot of its receivers pre-snap.
The dynasty angle is where this gets genuinely interesting. If Pearsall's absence lingers into 2027 or Kirk's role shrinks with age, Stribling becomes the clear long-term answer opposite Evans, and possibly the only young receiver on the roster with real staying power. At 6-foot-2, 207 pounds with a 4.36 forty, he's got the size-speed combo that dynasty managers chase in best-ball and keeper formats. Buying now, before the redraft ADP fully catches up, is the play if you believe the camp buzz is more signal than noise.
Watch the next two preseason games closely. If Stribling keeps stacking catches with the starters and Kirk's calf lingers, San Francisco may not have much choice but to hand him real snaps from Week 1. If he cools off once the third-string safeties and 25-cut defensive backs get benched, the WR3 range projection holds and he becomes a stash rather than a lineup lock. Either way, this is now one of the more actionable late-round shares in fantasy drafts, and the 49ers' banged-up receiver room made sure of it.
