I think Montreal will win a Cup with this group, but it ain't going to be this year AND...I think they're a very plausible destination for McDavid/Matthews & that will be what pushes them over the top. Even though I can't imagine TOR being able to stomach trading 34 to the Habs
The Matthews piece is the spicy one. The idea of Toronto shipping 34 down the 401 to the team that's been their hockey boogeyman for half a century is the kind of thing that makes Leafs fans physically ill, and Chief admits as much — he can't picture TOR stomaching it either. McDavid is the cleaner fit on paper. Edmonton's window is real but the supporting cast keeps getting picked apart, and if he ever decides he wants to play in a hockey city with a young core already built around him, Montreal checks every single box.
None of this happens if the Habs aren't proving it on the ice right now, and they are. The Caufield clip going around — puck off the visor, back to the bench, ready for his next shift — is the kind of thing that gets free-agent stars paying attention.
