Cardinals' QB room question comes down to Brissett's wallet

A year ago, Jacoby Brissett signed in Arizona to hold a clipboard behind Kyler Murray. Instead, a Murray foot injury handed him the offense, and Brissett turned a lost season into a personal breakout: career-high 3,366 passing yards and 23 touchdowns, even as the Cardinals stumbled to a 1-11 record in his starts and closed the year on a 9-game skid. The losing didn't sink him. It's Brissett, not Murray, who's now penciled in as Arizona's starter heading into 2026.

That's the awkward part. Brissett is technically still playing on the backup-money deal he signed to sit behind Murray, currently slated for a $4.88 million salary and just $1.5 million guaranteed. That's starter-QB production for backup-QB pay, and everyone in the building knows it needs fixing before the games start counting.

The Murray situation is exactly why this matters so much right now. His foot injury wiped out his 2025 season, and the belief around the building has been that a split is coming given the money and years still owed on his mega-extension. If Arizona is genuinely moving forward with Brissett under center, leaving him on a one-year prove-it rate while the season approaches would be a mess nobody wants walking into Week 1.

"Productive" is the word Schefter's report keeps coming back to, and that's notably not the word being used for a lot of other unresolved vet deals around the league right now. Productive means dollars and years are being discussed in good faith, not a standoff. It doesn't mean signed. Brissett has already bounced through six teams in his career; he knows how these things can stall out fast if either side gets stubborn.

For now, the actual football keeps moving regardless of the paperwork. Brissett is taking reps, running LaFleur's offense, and building the rapport a starter needs before the opener. But every day this drags past camp without a signature is a day the Cardinals risk their new QB1 walking into the season feeling undervalued. Keep an eye on this one before Arizona breaks camp.
