Charlotte's quarterback room has been a revolving door of transfers for two years, and it finally has an answer. Pete Thamel reported Friday that the 49ers have named Cole Gonzales the starter, closing out a 3-man competition that also featured UNC transfer Conner Harrell and Duke transfer Grayson Loftis.

Gonzales's path here is a winding one. He built his name at Western Carolina, where he was first-team All-SoCon and league offensive Player of the Year in 2023, throwing for 6,682 yards and 51 touchdowns across 27 games for the Catamounts. That kind of production got him a shot at Oklahoma, and from there he landed at Pitt for the 2025 season -- where things didn't go nearly as smoothly. He completed just 11 of 22 passes for 118 yards, a touchdown and an interception in limited snaps, mostly mop-up duty in a blowout of Duquesne and a spot start when Eli Holstein was benched against Louisville, before getting passed over for a true freshman. Charlotte is his fourth stop.

The competition Gonzales just won wasn't a light one. Harrell was Charlotte's starter last season before tearing his ACL and both menisci -- and spraining his MCL -- against Rice, just a week after throwing for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 49ers' lone win of the year. That injury put Loftis in the lineup for 7 of the final 8 games. So this offseason wasn't just Gonzales walking into an open job -- it was him beating out a former starter working his way back from a brutal knee injury and the guy who filled in and held the job down.
Now the pressure shifts to whether Gonzales's Western Carolina production can translate against real competition, because Charlotte isn't easing him in. The 49ers open the season at home against Citadel on Sept. 5 before flying straight into a Week 2 test at Ole Miss -- a massive step up in class for a quarterback who spent last fall watching from the Pitt bench. How he handles that jump will say a lot about whether this decision holds past October.
