Panthers' rookie WR class gets gutted in camp

Training camp is supposed to be the fun part. Chris Brazzell II, the Panthers' 3rd-round pick out of Tennessee, was reportedly doing exactly what he was drafted to do — stretching the field, giving Xavier Legette a real fight for the No. 3 receiver job behind Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker. Then Wednesday happened.

Brazzell had to be helped off the field and carted to the locker room, and it didn't take long for the situation to look serious. Reports quickly connected it to left knee soreness that had already cost him a couple of practices earlier in camp — the kind of detail that makes a scary moment look less like a fluke and more like something building.

Adam Schefter confirmed the diagnosis via The Athletic: a moderate LCL tear, initially pegged at up to 8 weeks. For a rookie trying to win a roster spot in a crowded receiver room, 8 weeks already felt brutal. Then the second opinion came back, and the outlook got worse.

By Thursday, the timeline flipped from "missed time" to "season over." Brazzell opted for surgery on the torn LCL, and the Panthers confirmed Friday that he's officially on injured reserve — ending his rookie year before he ever suited up for a regular-season snap. It's a rough break for a guy who ran a 4.37 40 at the combine and was billed as exactly the deep-threat element Carolina's offense needed.

It's not an isolated gut-punch, either. Field Yates pointed out that Carolina has now lost 2 of its more exciting young pieces for the year in the span of a week, with edge rusher Nic Scourton going down as well.

None of this changes the offseason math that got Brazzell to Carolina — a 6-foot-5 target with track speed, picked at No. 83 to give the Panthers size on the outside. It just delays it. Rehab from a surgically repaired LCL typically points toward a return well before the following training camp, but for now Legette and the rest of the receiver room just got a lot less crowded, and Brazzell's rookie tape is going to have to wait a full year.
