Christopher Vargas, the 6'5, 205-pound quarterback out of Massachusetts, is set to announce his college commitment on August 8, according to Rivals' Hayes Fawcett.
Vargas isn't some late-blooming projection — he's been the No. 1 quarterback in the Rivals300 for the 2028 class, the group of players who won't even be seniors until the fall of 2027. He plays his high school ball at St. John's Prep in Danvers, and he's collected offers from a who's-who of blue bloods: Ohio State, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia and Michigan among them, per multiple recruiting outlets.
Ohio State has emerged as the name most connected to him. Vargas has said the Buckeyes are "definitely setting the pace," citing their program culture and quarterback development track record — a pitch that clearly landed given how many analysts have pegged Columbus as the favorite. Penn State didn't even get in the race until offering him in January, well after Ohio State jumped in following a visit for the Michigan game at the end of the 2024 season.
There's a wrinkle worth noting: not every service agrees on where Vargas ranks. Rivals has him as the top quarterback in the class, while 247Sports slots him at No. 2. Either way, the range is elite-tier, and it's exactly why a commitment date this far out from his actual senior season is newsworthy — programs don't clear their calendars and camp outside a kid's school for a three-star.
August 8 won't end the noise even if he does pick a hat. Verbal commitments at this age are nonbinding, recruiting battles rarely stay settled for a full two years, and blue bloods don't stop calling just because a kid said a school's name into a camera. But for a class that's still finding its shape, Vargas locking in a decision — Ohio State or otherwise — will set the tone for how the rest of the 2028 QB race plays out.
