Texans are in no rush to pay C.J. Stroud

The Texans keep saying all the right things about C.J. Stroud. They just aren't backing it up with a check yet. Ian Rapoport's latest update paints a picture of a franchise that's fully bought in on its quarterback long-term, but in absolutely no hurry to make it official on paper.

That gap between belief and action is the whole story here. Stroud went 2nd overall in 2023, won Offensive Rookie of the Year, and looked like a top-5 quarterback out of the gate. He's now entering a contract year of sorts, playing on the fifth-year option Houston already exercised, which buys the front office time it clearly wants to use.

It's not like Houston is broke or cheap about it, either. Will Anderson Jr., Stroud's draft classmate, got locked up with a 3-year, $150 million extension back in May. So the front office isn't shy about writing big checks. They're just apparently not writing this one yet.

For his part, Stroud has been pretty chill about the whole thing publicly, saying he lets his agent handle it and that he's focused on football, adding "I think I've held my bargain up." That's the kind of quote that sounds patient right up until it doesn't, especially with the market for elite young quarterbacks only getting more expensive by the offseason.

GM Nick Caserio has described the talks as productive, and ownership has called the team fully committed to Stroud, but "productive" and "close" are two very different words. Other reporting has framed the negotiations as essentially paused entering the season, which lines up with what Rapoport is saying now. Nobody's panicking in Houston, but nobody's signing anything either.

The longer this drags, the more it becomes a storyline to watch all season. Every big game Stroud plays only raises his price tag, and every shaky one gives the Texans an excuse to wait. Houston clearly views him as the guy going forward, they just haven't put a number on what that's worth yet.
