Connor Hellebuyck suspension ends October 23

TLDR: Connor Hellebuyck's suspension is set to end Friday, October 23, barring a trade, per Elliotte Friedman, which puts the Jets goalie back on the books 2 days before the Heritage Classic.
The standoff in Winnipeg finally has an end date, and it is next week.
Connor Hellebuyck’s suspension is set to end October 23, per @FriedgeHNIC. Hellebuyck had informed the Jets he intended to report before their season opener.
Look at the second line of that, because it is the twist. Hellebuyck had told the Jets he planned to report before their season opener. Reporting says his camp notified the team on October 2, before the regular season started, that he intended to come back on October 23. Winnipeg still made him serve the time. Under Article 15.13(c)(v) of the CBA, a player who misses camp without permission can be given a disciplinary suspension of reasonable length once he returns, and that is the 3-week stretch now running out.
Quick recap of how we got here. Hellebuyck, 33, was the 2025 Hart Trophy winner and has won 3 Vezinas. He has been a Jet since Winnipeg drafted him in 2012, and in late August he went public with a trade request. His statement through agent Ray Petkau said he had tried to handle it quietly while the organization explored its options, and that moving on was the best path forward for him and his family. Nobody traded him, he didn't show up to camp, and the Jets suspended him on September 16.
The Jets beat reporters picked up on what the timeline means right away. If the clock started on October 2, then this was never just a holding pattern. It was punishment all along.
Well this is quite something. It would suggest we’re already IN the additional team-imposed discipline zone right now (and have been since Oct. 2) and that is about to end this coming Friday. Which would really turn up the heat.
"Turn up the heat" fits. It has been expensive for Hellebuyck too. He carries an $8.5 million cap hit, he has reportedly been forfeiting more than $38,000 a day since the season started, and the total is expected to pass $900,000 before Friday. Once he's reinstated, Winnipeg has to fit him back onto its 23-man active roster, so a roster move is likely coming whether he's in net or not.
And then there's the date, which might be the most awkward part of the whole thing.
Six days to go. I mentioned on @SiriusXMNHL this morning that some time around next weekend would shed further light on this situation. As Friedge reports, barring a trade, Friday is the day… with the Heritage Classic two days later.
Friday is the deadline in every sense. Either Kevin Cheveldayoff finds a deal for a former MVP this week, or Hellebuyck comes back to a dressing room that has spent a month answering questions about him, 48 hours before one of the biggest regular-season stages the Jets get all year. "Barring a trade" is carrying that whole Friedman report. Teams calling Winnipeg know exactly when the leverage runs out, and so does the goalie.
