DeAndre Hopkins trades cleats for a whistle at Georgia Tech

It's not every day a 5-time All-Pro walks away from an NFL locker room and into a college position meeting, but that's exactly what DeAndre Hopkins is doing. Georgia Tech is bringing him on as an assistant wide receivers coach, and the news broke fast and everywhere at once on July 31.

Bleacher Report had it first out of the gate, but Pete Nakos backed it up with sourcing that matters. Nakos and On3's Kelly Quinlan reported the hire came from sources close to the program, and crucially, that Hopkins isn't some outside hire parachuting in cold. He's got real familiarity with the building — Georgia Tech OC George Godsey has a long relationship with Hopkins, and Hopkins knows the ACC landscape from his Clemson days.

Georgia Tech has hired former NFL star receiver DeAndre Hopkins as an assistant wide receivers coach, sources tell @Kelly_Quinlan and me for @On3. The former Clemson WR was recently in a coaching role with the Patriots in training camp. CBS first reported he was being targeted to join GT staff.

The backstory here is the interesting part. Hopkins spent time at Patriots training camp this offseason, working alongside Mike Vrabel's staff — the two go back to their Texans and Titans days together. Reports out of New England framed it as Hopkins testing the coaching waters while he figured out whether he still wanted to play. Vrabel confirmed this past week that Hopkins' stint in Foxborough had wrapped, calling it a good experience for everyone involved, and within days Hopkins had a landing spot in Atlanta instead.

For context on who Georgia Tech just landed: Hopkins caught over 1,000 passes for more than 13,000 yards and 85 touchdowns across 13 NFL seasons with the Texans, Cardinals, Titans, Chiefs and Ravens. That's a Hall of Fame-caliber resume walking into a WR room at a program that's never really had that level of NFL pedigree on staff. Head coach Brent Key gets an instant credibility boost with recruits, and Hopkins gets a soft landing to build out a coaching résumé while reportedly leaving the door open on a playing return down the line.

This is also part of a bigger trend of recent NFL names testing out college sidelines rather than jumping straight to TV analyst chairs or retirement. Whether Hopkins sticks around Atlanta long-term or this ends up being a stepping stone back to the league in some capacity, Georgia Tech's receivers just got access to a guy who's actually lived at the highest level of the position. That's not nothing.
