DeMarvion Overshown out for Cowboys vs. Packers

TLDR: The Cowboys ruled out DeMarvion Overshown with a hamstring injury and left him home from Green Bay, while questionable corner Joey Porter Jr. made the trip for Sunday night.

Overshown went into Friday as questionable. By Saturday afternoon he wasn't getting on the plane.

#Cowboys LB DeMarvion Overshown isn’t traveling to Green Bay and has been ruled out for tomorrow vs. the #Packers.

Nobody should be shocked. Brian Schottenheimer had already called Overshown a long shot for this weekend, and the hamstring has been an issue since the opener. He strained it in Week 1, a game where he made 7 tackles, and he's missed 4 straight since. Sunday makes it 5. For a linebacker this defense badly needed to be the guy, the season so far is basically 1 game.

Dallas made the usual Saturday moves to fill in the depth chart behind him, pulling 2 defensive backs up from the practice squad.

Cowboys roster updates: CB Derion Kendrick and S Juanyeh Thomas elevated from the practice squad. LB DeMarvion Overshown, who was listed as questionable on Friday's game status report, is out. He’s not traveling to Green Bay.

Derion Kendrick and Juanyeh Thomas coming up tells you where the worry is: the secondary. Cobie Durant is already out with a hamstring of his own, Ameer Speed is questionable with a knee, and Joey Porter Jr. is questionable with an ankle after missing last Thursday's loss to Tampa Bay with an illness and only getting a limited practice in Friday. The news that late Saturday night was that Porter is at least in Green Bay.

So Porter is a real maybe and Overshown is a definite no. That's a rough way to walk into Lambeau, and the backdrop makes it worse, because the Packers are the team that has Micah Parsons now. Dallas has spent the time since that trade trying to rebuild a front that can stop anybody, and losing its most explosive linebacker for another week doesn't help.

The one break Dallas gets: Josh Jacobs is still on the Commissioner's Exempt List for this game, and Green Bay has been near the bottom of the league running the ball without him. If this Cowboys defense was ever going to get through a week without its best linebacker, this matchup is about as kind as it gets. Watch Porter's status at inactives. That's the last real injury question before kickoff.
