Devin Cooley hurt as Oilers shut out Flames 4-0

TLDR: Devin Cooley left with a lower-body injury after Colton Dach crashed his crease, Brennan Othmann went down after a fight, and Edmonton shut out Calgary 4-0 to end its 4-game win streak.

The trouble came late in the 1st period, when Dach ran into Cooley in the blue paint. Dustin Wolf was in net when the 2nd period started.

After an awkward collision in the 1st, Dustin Wolf takes over in net for Devin Cooley to start the 2nd period.

Cooley played the last 12 seconds of the 1st after the hit, and Dach got 2 minutes for interference. Then Cooley wasn't on the bench, and Calgary's emergency backup had left the press box. You didn't need a doctor to know what that meant. Cooley injured his left leg, and head coach Ryan Huska gave no update after the game.

The timing is awful. Cooley came in on a 4-game win streak with a.955 save percentage, and this was his 5th straight start. Calgary re-signed him over the summer to a 2-year extension at $1.35 million per season, and he's been earning it. Right now he's the reason the Flames have been winning.

Cooley wasn't the only Flame who didn't make it to the end. Brennan Othmann went missing from the bench too, and the team later made it official for both of them.

Flames confirm Cooley (lower body) and Othmann (upper body) are officially done for the night. The first came on a crease-crash from Colton Dach, the second likely from a fight with Ty Emberson.

With 2 bodies gone, the Oilers took over. Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen on the power play and Alex Formenton all scored, and Connor McDavid had 2 assists. It's Calgary's first shutout loss of the season, and it drops the Flames to 5-7-0. Getting blanked in a Battle of Alberta game is bad enough. Losing your hottest player and a forward in the same night is worse.

Now the crease could go back to Wolf, who had an.834 save percentage through 5 appearances before tonight. That's well short of what Cooley has been giving them. Calgary hosts Seattle on Friday and Colorado on Saturday, so if the lower-body injury lingers, Wolf could start 2 games in 2 nights. Keep an eye on whether the Flames call up a goalie before Friday. If they do, Cooley probably isn't close.
