Lions raid Vegas for their Super Bowl-winning linebacker

Jordan Schultz broke the news first: the Lions are bringing in Devin White on a one-year deal, and it's the kind of quiet-but-real upgrade that flew under the radar during a busy stretch of the offseason. White made 17 starts for Las Vegas last year, piled up 174 tackles (third-most in the entire NFL), 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and an interception. That's not a camp body. That's a guy who was one of the most productive linebackers in the league a year ago.

The move got instant pickup across the league, with outlets like SleeperNFL amplifying Schultz's report within minutes.

White's path here has been anything but a straight line. Tampa Bay took him 5th overall back in 2019, and he became a cornerstone of the Bucs defense that won Super Bowl LV, racking up 140 tackles and 9 sacks that championship run. He made a Pro Bowl in 2021, then bounced through Philadelphia and Houston before landing in Las Vegas, where last season became arguably the best statistical year of his career. Detroit is betting that version of White shows up, not the one who's dealt with coverage and tackling lapses along the way.

Schultz added the context that made the signing make sense: the Lions had "quietly" been exploring an upgrade at linebacker even before anything went sideways in camp.

The timing lines up with a real need. Rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder left practice early with a leg injury that required evaluation, thinning out a position group the Lions clearly wanted reinforced anyway. Bringing in a former All-Pro with a Super Bowl ring and a 174-tackle season on his résumé is about as good a stopgap as you can find in early August, and it gives Detroit real insurance without touching the draft capital or cap sheet in a major way.

For a defense that's been building toward contention, adding a proven, high-volume tackler on a low-risk, one-year prove-it deal is low-downside and potentially high-reward. Worst case, White is quality depth through a Rolder injury scare. Best case, the Lions just got one of the most productive linebackers in football for pennies, and everyone else is left wondering why nobody snapped him up sooner.
