The Dolphins spent this offseason rebuilding a defense that badly needed a face, and they found it in the guy who already led the league in stops. Miami and All-Pro linebacker Jordyn Brooks agreed to a 3-year, $51.3M extension with $35M guaranteed, a deal negotiated by agent Erik Burkhardt of Roc Nation Sports.
This isn't a reach for a guy riding a hot streak. Brooks has now led the NFL in tackles twice — in 2021 with Seattle and again in 2025 with Miami — and last season's 183 stops came with First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, both firsts for him. He signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in 2024 after Seattle let him walk, and it took all of one dominant season for Miami to treat him like a foundational piece instead of a rental.
The trade rumors around Brooks weren't nothing, either. According to Jordan Schultz, Miami fielded plenty of calls this offseason on moving him and shut every one of them down flat — the front office had already decided he was the centerpiece of Jeff Hafley's new defense, both as a player and as a locker-room voice.
Brooks isn't an isolated case, either — he's part of a pattern. Schefter noted the Dolphins have now locked up 3 core building blocks in recent weeks: Brooks, center Aaron Brewer, and running back De'Von Achane. That's a front office trying to build continuity around Tua Tagovailaga's timeline rather than let good, cheap-ish players walk into free agency and start over.
The deal officially got signed and made real a day later, with Schefter confirming Miami had signed Brooks through the 2029 season — turning an agreed-upon handshake into ink on paper before training camp even opens. For a defense that's been searching for an identity since Hafley took over, having a 183-tackle All-Pro locked in for the next half-decade is about as good a starting point as you can ask for.
