According to Nakos, Bowen tore his hip labrum mid-season and just kept playing through it while Notre Dame stumbled to a start that ultimately kept them out of the College Football Playoff. "You can't go 0-2 and expect to be in the playoffs," Bowen said, per the report, adding that the finish "left a not-great taste in everybody's mouth — as it should." That's not a guy making excuses. That's a captain owning it.

The injury was serious enough that Bowen needed offseason surgery to fix it, undergoing a January procedure to repair the labrum along with a bone-shaving operation to address impingement in the joint, per multiple Notre Dame beat outlets. A typical recovery for that kind of surgery runs 4-6 months, and Bowen reportedly pushed to be ahead of schedule, targeting an early-June return to full go. He was limited through spring practice but was back in pads by April, months removed from the operation.

That timeline matters for a Notre Dame defense that leaned on Bowen as a captain and a tone-setter even while he was compromised. A healthy version of him changes the math for a unit trying to erase the memory of a playoff-less fall — and for a program that knows exactly how good it can be when everything lines up, having watched it happen the year before.

None of that guarantees anything. Hip surgeries can linger, and "ahead of schedule" in April doesn't always hold up under fall camp reps. But the version of Bowen that Nakos is describing sounds like someone who's not just healthy again — he's carrying last season's disappointment into every rep, which is exactly the kind of edge Notre Dame will need if they want a different result in 2026.
