Chiefs training camp got interrupted by real life this week. Eric Bieniemy, back in Kansas City as offensive coordinator, left the team's camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, after learning his wife Mia had been shot Sunday night at the couple's home in Ashburn, Virginia. Andy Schefter broke the news Monday, and it only got heavier from there.

Within hours, the story took a darker turn. Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the couple's 27-year-old son, was arrested and charged with 3 felonies: malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
The felony charges against Elijah Bieniemy started circulating Monday afternoon.

Mia Bieniemy, 57, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized in serious condition following the shooting, which reportedly happened around 7:32 p.m. ET Sunday. By Monday, the update everyone was hoping for came through — she's stable.
The update on Mia Bieniemy's condition landed alongside confirmation of the charges against her son.

Elijah Bieniemy is being held without bond at a detention center in Loudoun County. Eric Bieniemy, meanwhile, was pulled away from a football job he'd only recently returned to — he rejoined the Chiefs as OC this offseason after his stint with the Commanders — and skipped Monday's practice to be with his family. Andy Reid addressed it with reporters, saying Mia is "stable, which is a plus" and that the team's hearts go out to Bieniemy, who has "a great support group" in Kansas City.

But the football stuff feels almost beside the point right now. A family is dealing with something no press conference is built for, and the only headline that matters this week is that Mia Bieniemy is expected to be okay.
