Filip Bystedt makes NHL debut for Sharks vs. Canucks

TLDR: Filip Bystedt, San Jose's 2022 first-round pick, drew in for his NHL debut Thursday against Vancouver, with his family flying in from Sweden and Ty Dellandrea taking Zack Ostapchuk's spot at fourth center.

The Sharks had already called him up from the Barracuda, so the only question left at morning skate was whether he would actually play. He would.

Filip Bystedt will make his NHL debut

This one took a while. Bystedt has spent parts of 4 seasons in the AHL, and the 6-foot-4 Swede piled up 42 goals and 106 points in 131 games with the Barracuda before San Jose finally pulled the trigger. Ryan Warsofsky didn't pretend it was charity, either. "He's earned it," the coach said, pointing to the years the 22-year-old put in down the road. And he isn't being hidden on the 4th line: he's centering Tyler Toffoli and Kiefer Sherwood, which is real NHL skill on both wings for a guy playing his first game.

Then there's the part that makes it a good story and not just a transaction. A first NHL game usually comes with a family scramble, and this one came with a transatlantic one. Bystedt's family was still in the air from Sweden when he talked to reporters that morning.

Bystedt says his family from Sweden should make it in time to Tank for his NHL debut. In the air now, should land in SFO soon

An update later that morning said they were due to land in the Bay Area early in the afternoon, which gave them a comfortable window to make puck drop at the Tank. Flying halfway around the world on a few hours' notice to watch your kid take his first NHL shift is about as hockey-parent as it gets.

The timing isn't an accident. San Jose had dropped 3 straight, the last one a 2-0 home loss to Buffalo, and recalled Bystedt the next day. Warsofsky said plainly that the team is "not playing great hockey," and Bystedt wasn't the only change. Bystedt's call-up was the headline, but there was a 2nd lineup decision down the middle.

Dellandrea will play over Ostapchuk tonight at 4C

That's a real message to Zack Ostapchuk, who had played in every game this season before sitting Thursday. He wasn't a disaster, but the Sharks want more out of the bottom of the lineup, so Ty Dellandrea got the 4th-line center job, at least for now. Ostapchuk addressed what he has to fix after the decision, and the wording from the Sharks side of things was careful: Dellandrea has the spot "for now."

Behind all of it, Yaroslav Askarov got the start in net. The thing to watch from here is simple: whether Bystedt does enough with Toffoli and Sherwood to stay up once the debut buzz wears off, and whether Ostapchuk gets back in quickly or Dellandrea holds on to that spot. For a team that's been losing, a first-round center who finally looks ready is the best news it's had in a week.
