Florida names Aaron Philo starting QB for Week 1 vs. FAU

The Jon Sumrall era in Gainesville has its starting quarterback, and it's not a name Florida fans were tracking a year ago. Aaron Philo, a redshirt freshman who spent the last two seasons at Georgia Tech, has been named the Gators' Week 1 starter against Florida Atlantic, according to Pete Nakos of On3 and Pete Thamel of ESPN.

The pairing makes sense the second you connect the dots. Philo isn't walking into a brand new offense — he's following his guy. New Florida OC Buster Faulkner coached and recruited Philo at Georgia Tech, and when Faulkner left for Gainesville, Philo followed him through the portal. That kind of built-in continuity matters a lot for a young quarterback trying to win a job fast.

Florida needed an answer at the position after DJ Lagway, who'd started the bulk of the last two seasons, entered the transfer portal. Sumrall — hired away from Tulane after a 4-8 finish for Billy Napier in 2025 — is now handing the keys to a passer with limited college snaps but real flashes, including a 373-yard, 21-of-28 outing in his first career start at Georgia Tech.
