Gabe Speier drilled Gleyber Torres half an inning after Cal Raleigh got plunked, and Seattle's bullpen paid for it with two ejections in a tense win over Detroit.

Baseball's unwritten rules got enforced the old-fashioned way on Wednesday night in Seattle. After Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh took a fastball to the body from Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesus, it took less than an inning for someone to answer for it.

The clip shows Speier's inside heater catching Torres, the two sides pouring onto the field, and the chaos that followed before order was restored.

Gabe Speier came out of the Mariners bullpen in the 8th and threw back-to-back pitches inside to Gleyber Torres, the second one finding him. Torres wasn't shy about letting Raleigh know how he felt, words were exchanged, and both benches and bullpens emptied onto the field. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch stormed out to argue for an ejection, and he got his wish — Speier was tossed for the intentional plunking.

Mariners skipper Dan Wilson wasn't about to let that slide quietly. He came out to argue the call and got himself run too, leaving Seattle down a reliever and a manager in the middle of a game they still had to close out.

It capped a wild night on the mound overall — starter Bryan Woo had already thrown 7 scoreless innings while hitting 3 different Tigers batters himself, an eyebrow-raising combination that had this one simmering long before Speier ever entered. Julio Rodríguez had given Seattle the cushion they needed with a 3-run homer earlier in the game, and the Mariners held on for a 4-2 win despite the ejections.

Retaliation pitches always draw scrutiny from the league office, and intentionally targeting a hitter is grounds for supplemental discipline even after an in-game ejection. Don't be surprised if MLB hands Speier a suspension in the coming days — throwing at someone's body as payback, even in a game with 5 total hit-by-pitches, tends not to go unpunished.
