Max Johnson named Georgia Southern's starting QB

TLDR: Max Johnson is getting QB1 duties for a fourth different college program, and this time he opens against Charleston Southern before a Week 2 date with Clemson.
Georgia Southern has handed the keys to Max Johnson, and it's the kind of news that only makes sense once you know how much football this guy has already played. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported the Eagles have named the veteran transfer their starting quarterback, with a debut set against Charleston Southern and a Week 2 trip that lands Clemson on the schedule.

Sources: Georgia Southern has named veteran Max Johnson the school’s starting quarterback, and he’ll debut for them against Charleston Southern and face Clemson in Week 2. This is his fourth stint as a starter, as he’s started at LSU, Texas A&M and North Carolina prior.
On3's Pete Nakos confirmed the same move independently, citing a source on the decision from Clay Helton's staff. Two respected national reporters landing on the same news within minutes of each other tells you this wasn't much of a competition by the time fall camp wrapped.

This is Johnson's fourth different starting job in college football, which is a wild sentence for a player who once looked like an SEC fixture. He broke in at LSU in 2020, moved to Texas A&M, then to North Carolina, and now to Georgia Southern. Thamel notes he's thrown for 6,355 yards and 49 touchdowns across that stretch — production that would headline most résumés if durability hadn't kept getting in the way.

He brings a proven track record to Clay Helton’s team, as he’s thrown for 6,355 yards and 49 touchdowns since arriving at LSU in 2020. Johnson came back from a devastating broken femur in 2024 while at UNC that required 5 surgeries.
The durability issue is the real story here. Johnson suffered a broken femur in UNC's 2024 season opener at Minnesota, an injury so severe it required 5 surgeries and, by his own account afterward, briefly had doctors worried about saving the leg. Coming back from that to win a starting job anywhere is notable. Winning one against Turner Helton, the head coach's own son, in fall camp is a different level of statement.
None of this guarantees smooth sailing for Georgia Southern. The Eagles get a soft landing spot in Charleston Southern to open, but the Week 2 trip means Johnson's first extended look under center in Statesboro colors comes against a Clemson defense that isn't in the business of easing anybody in. Still, for a program looking to stabilize under Helton, landing a former Power 4 starter with this much tape — even scarred tape — is as good a bet as the Sun Belt allows.
