Cut-down day usually means the news is a guy getting waived. This time it was a full-blown trade. The Bears are sending defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. to the Falcons, according to Adam Schefter, with Chicago getting cornerback Clark Phillips III and a fifth-round pick coming back the other way.

The connection here isn't subtle. Ian Rapoport and Field Yates both flagged it: Falcons GM Ian Cunningham was Chicago's assistant GM back in 2023 when the Bears used the 53rd overall pick on Dexter out of Florida. Cunningham left for Atlanta this offseason, and now he's importing the guy he helped draft.
Dexter's been a two-year starter in Chicago, piling up 11 sacks as a starter over that stretch per ESPN, and he's entering the final year of his rookie deal. He's a legit space-eater at 6-foot-6, 326 pounds, which lines up with what Atlanta's been chasing all offseason -- the Falcons struggled against the run last year and already added Maason Smith and Da'Shawn Hand to the interior line, only to see Hand go down with a leg injury in camp. Dexter plugs a hole they've been trying to patch since spring.
There's a wrinkle, though. Brad Biggs reported Dexter skipped Chicago's trip to Nashville with a minor hamstring issue -- now instead of flying home, he's headed straight to Atlanta.

Biggs also laid out why the Bears felt fine moving on: they signed three defensive tackles in free agency and drafted another, so Dexter became the logical guy to flip for value at a position of actual need. That's cornerback, where Chicago's roster took a hit this summer -- and Phillips, a 2023 fourth-rounder out of Utah who's carved out a role in the slot, fills that gap while the fifth-rounder is just gravy.
For Atlanta, this is Cunningham stamping his first real fingerprint on the roster since taking the GM job -- betting on a player he already vetted once, on a defense that needed exactly what Dexter brings. For Chicago, it's a cut-day value swap that turns a rotational luxury into a starting corner and an extra pick. Neither team walks away looking like they lost, which is usually the sign of a trade that made sense for both sides.
