The Canes came out of the gate exactly how you'd expect a home team that hadn't won a playoff game on its own ice in over a week to come out — desperate. Carolina jumped Montreal early and put one home before the Habs could find their legs, the kind of start that usually breaks a road team in a hostile barn.

But this Montreal team doesn't really do panic anymore. They've been the cockroach of the bracket all spring, and sure enough, the very first shot they put on net found twine — a Danault dish to Josh Anderson, who has quietly turned into one of the more reliable playoff finishers nobody talks about. Ryan Whitney called it live and he wasn't wrong: Anderson is built for this time of year.
Montreal needed one shot to answer.
From there it turned into the kind of game that makes you remember why playoff hockey runs the table on every other sport in May. Goalies doing things goalies shouldn't be able to do, sticks ending up in skates, Anderson burying another gritty one to knot it back up after Carolina kept pushing the pace. Whitney was on his couch marveling at the fact Montreal had 9 shots and was somehow still tied — which, frankly, is the whole Habs playoff run in one sentence.

Then overtime happened, and Nikolaj Ehlers happened. Carolina spent the extra frame absolutely caving Montreal's zone in, and the goal felt inevitable the second the puck dropped. Ehlers ripped one that Whitney compared to the Colorado-Minnesota Game 5 OT winner — high praise, deserved praise.

So the series heads back north tied 1-1, which, if you're a Habs fan, is exactly what you signed up for. Mintzy nailed the vibe — stealing Game 1 on the road was the whole assignment, and the Bell Centre is going to be absolutely unhinged Monday night. Carolina got their home win, ended that weird leaguewide road-team streak, and now has to go play hockey in the loudest building in the sport.
