Valderrama is one of the meanest tracks in golf. Severiano Ballesteros designed it to chew up scorecards, and LIV's Andalucia stop turned into exactly that kind of grind. Tyrrell Hatton just happens to be one of the few guys on the planet who actually seems to enjoy that sort of suffering, and he rode it all the way to a -11 finish and the trophy.

The number itself tells you how hard Valderrama was playing. -11 wins a lot of LIV events by 4 or 5. Around these cork oaks, it was enough to hold off the field including the guy in front of his home crowd who absolutely refused to go quietly.
That would be Jon Rahm, who spent the back nine doing Jon Rahm things in Spain. Sitting at -7, four back of Hatton, he stepped up to the 206-yard par-3 15th and damn near rolled it in. The ball trickled out to a few feet from the cup, the kind of shot that briefly makes you believe the whole tournament might flip.

It didn't flip. Hatton kept doing what he's been doing all year, which is grumble, fume, and absolutely refuse to make a big number when the pressure tightens. He's quietly become one of the more reliable closers LIV has, and Valderrama is the kind of resume line that travels well.
Rahm leaves with a near-miss highlight and a runner-up-ish weekend on home soil, which is the cruelest possible outcome for a guy who clearly wanted this one. Hatton leaves with the W on one of the hardest courses in the world. Pretty good Sunday if you're him.
