Bussi Watches His Parents Lose It After Canes Take Game 4

Carolina backup Brandon Bussi got the receipt every kid who ever laced 'em up dreams about: his parents losing their minds on national TV after a Stanley Cup Final win.

Game 4 in Vegas was the kind of track meet that gets goalies pulled out of the credits and into the story. Carolina jumped early, Vegas clawed back, the score sat at 3-3 in the third, and then the captain decided enough was enough. Jordan Staal scored falling down to put the Canes back in front, and from there it became a series tied up and a city in Carolina feeling something it hasn't felt in a long, long time.

Which brings us to the actual gift of the night. Brandon Bussi — Canes goalie, Long Island kid who took the long road through college and the AHL to even sniff a Cup Final roster spot — got pulled aside after the win and shown a clip of his parents reacting in real time at home. Mom and dad absolutely come unglued. Bussi's response, caught on camera, is basically the only one a human can have in that situation: 'I can't believe you guys just did that to me on TV.'

This is the stuff you can't manufacture. Every kid who ever played pond hockey, every parent who drove to a 5 a.m. practice, every grandparent who pretended to understand icing — that whole pipeline of belief ends in a living room somewhere screaming at a television because their kid is one of the last ones standing. The hockey itself has been an absolute war (Big Cat is right, the SCF and NBA Finals running in parallel is a gift), but the Bussi family clip is the kind of thing that outlives the box score.

Series rolls on, and yeah, the goaltending has been an adventure for both sides. But pause on this one. Somewhere in Long Island a phone is ringing off the hook and a mom is still crying. That's what it's all about.
