Diallo's 90th-Minute Dagger Steals Group E For Ivory Coast

Côte d'Ivoire cracked a scoreless slog wide open at the death, with Diallo burying Ecuador 1-0 and turning Group E on its head.

For 88 minutes this thing was headed nowhere. Ecuador and Côte d'Ivoire were trading nothing in a Group E match that looked destined for a 0-0 yawner. Then Diallo decided he wasn't flying to the World Cup to draw.

A late winner at a World Cup is the single most valuable currency in the group stage. 3 points instead of 1, goal differential tiebreaker padded, and an entire locker room walking into matchday 2 believing they can hang. Ecuador, meanwhile, gets to spend the next 72 hours rewatching the same clip and wondering how they let a point slip in stoppage time.

The Barstool corner of the soccer internet was wide awake for it too. Dave Portnoy summed up half the country's relationship with the Ivorians in one tweet — roughly 11 Americans knew what Côte d'Ivoire was before this World Cup, and a 90th-minute winner is exactly how that number balloons overnight.

Portnoy on the average American's pre-tournament familiarity with the Ivorians.

There can’t be more than 11 people in the United States who knew what Côte d'Ivoire was before the World Cup.

Zah was riding the match in real time, even sending a thank-you to a tipster after the dagger dropped. That's the beauty of late winners — somewhere, somebody's ticket cashed on the 89th-minute clock, and somebody else is staring at a screen wondering what just happened to their group. Côte d'Ivoire didn't care which side you were on. They got the 3.

Zah cashing in on the late goal with an inside-joke shoutout.
