Jacob Misiorowski had 1 job on the last Sunday of the regular season against the Cardinals: don't give it back. He didn't. His first pitch of the day was a 102.0 mph fastball that got a fly out, and he went on to throw more than 5 scoreless innings on 2 hits in a 6-4 Brewers win. The big right-hander walked off with the lowest ERA in baseball, the most strikeouts in baseball and a Cy Young case that's hard to argue with.
Milwaukee made it easy on him early. Misiorowski went 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st, and then the offense strung together 5 singles for 3 runs in the bottom half. One of those runs gave Brice Turang his 100th RBI of the season.

Now look at the whole season. In 174.2 innings he posted a 0.80 WHIP, walked 44 and held hitters to a.157 average. According to MLB.com, the ERA, the strikeouts and the opponent average all led the majors, and he's the first pitcher in Brewers history to lead the league in ERA and strikeouts in the same season. The only other pitchers with 250-plus strikeouts and a WHIP that low are Justin Verlander in 2019 and Pedro Martinez in 2000. That's the list.

The history part is almost silly. The Brewers' franchise record for ERA by a starter used to be Mike Caldwell's 2.36 from 1978, and Misiorowski beat it by more than half a run. He also joins Burnes as the only Brewers to win an MLB ERA title. Burnes did it in 2021 and took home the NL Cy Young that year too, which is a pretty good sign of where this one is headed.

For Brewers fans who have been waiting for a real October ace, this is the first time in a long while it feels like they have one.
