Jacory Croskey-Merritt pushes Rachaad White for Commanders RB1

Washington didn't hand anybody the keys to the backfield this offseason, and that's exactly the point. Jacory Croskey-Merritt flashed as a rookie last year, but the Commanders still went out and brought in Rachaad White, a veteran with real receiving chops, muddying what looked like a clean succession plan.

That tweet gets at the crux of it. Croskey-Merritt isn't trying to be known as just a between-the-tackles bruiser — he wants credit for what he can do out of the backfield as a receiver too. Beat reporter Ben Standig has apparently seen enough in camp to believe the pass-catching flashes are real, and that they could be enough to hand him the lead role outright.

It's not a slam dunk, though. Croskey-Merritt piled up 805 rushing yards on just seven starts as a rookie in 2025 and reportedly led the league in success rate, gaining at least 40% of the needed yardage on over half his carries. That's the profile of a guy who should be the early-down and workhorse option. But White isn't just a camp body — he posted a 7.1 yards-per-catch average and an 89.1% catch rate in Tampa, and put up nearly 1,540 scrimmage yards with 9 total touchdowns back in 2023. That's exactly the third-down, check-down safety-valve production Washington's offense didn't have last season.

Fantasy managers are already circling this backfield, and for good reason — whichever guy wins the passing-down work instantly becomes a PPR asset even in a timeshare. The offensive coordinator has reportedly signaled confidence that Croskey-Merritt can handle a starter's workload, but that doesn't mean White gets phased out. More likely, this shakes out as a committee where touches are earned week to week based on who's actually producing.
