Michal Postava debuts as John Gibson exits Red Wings win

TLDR: Michal Postava got called up on an emergency basis Thursday and ended up playing the 3rd period in Vancouver after John Gibson left with an upper-body injury, and the Red Wings won 5-2.

It started as a routine call-up for a backup goalie. Daniil Tarasov tweaked something in practice, so Detroit needed a body on the bench behind Gibson.

Red Wings calling up Michael Postava, after Daniil Terrasv tweaked something in yesterday‘s practice.

Postava is 24, undrafted and from Czechia. He played second-division Czech hockey with HC Prerov in 2023-24 and posted a.943 save percentage there, then moved up to HC Kometa Brno in the Extraliga before Detroit signed him to a 2-year entry-level deal in the summer of 2025. He went 17-6-0 with Grand Rapids last season and was 4-0-0 with a.954 save percentage and a 1.25 GAA this year when the phone rang. So the AHL numbers say he can play. Nobody expected to find out at Rogers Arena on a Thursday night.

Michal Postava making his NHL debut, replaces John Gibson in 3p of Red Wings at Canucks as Gibson left with upper-body injury.

That's the part that should worry Detroit. Gibson is the starter, Tarasov is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, and the guy who was supposed to sit on the bench and open the door finished the game in goal. If Gibson's upper-body injury costs him any real time, the Wings are leaning on an emergency recall and whoever is healthy in Grand Rapids.

To be fair, Vancouver wasn't exactly testing anyone. The Canucks press box spent the night roasting the home team's shot total, and Thomas Drance put it about as bluntly as you can.

And it's official if the #Canucks and Red Wings had played on Thursday night without a Detroit goaltender, the score would currently be tied.

The skaters did the rest. JT Compher came back after missing 7 games, with Sheldon Dries going down to the Griffins to make room, and Detroit put the game away while the kid in net got his feet wet. Lucas Raymond had 2 goals and 3 points, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard picked up 2 assists, and Postava's first NHL appearance goes down as a win.

Red Wings take it by a 5-2 final in Vancouver. Lucas Raymond scores twice and has three points, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård with two assists, and Michal Postava makes his NHL debut in the win

So Postava gets the puck and the story, and Detroit gets a headache. The thing to watch now is the update on Gibson's upper body and whether Tarasov is ready. If neither one is, a goalie who wasn't supposed to play on this road trip could be making an NHL start before the week is out.
