The home run calls, the strangled vowels, the YANKEES WIN drawn out like he was milking the last second of a season. He was a one-of-one, and when he finally hung it up, there was no replacing him. So Michael Kay, who knows that booth and that voice better than anyone alive, is doing the next best thing: borrowing the bit.
It started clicking on an Aaron Judge home run, where Kay leaned all the way into a Sterling tribute on the call. It is exactly the kind of thing only Kay can pull off, because he was actually there for all of it.
Then he did it again on the closeout, going full Sterling with the YANKEES WIN, theeeeeee Yankees win line that ended every Bombers W on the radio for a generation. If you're a Yankees fan of a certain age, that is the sound of a good night going to bed.
And the home run cadence too. That ball is high, it is far, it is GONE is Sterling's fingerprint on baseball broadcasting, and Kay isn't doing a karaoke impression of it, he's using it the way you'd hand a guy's jersey down to the next kid on the team. Same words, slightly different mouth.
Some broadcasters would steal these lines and it would feel cheap. With Kay it feels like a guy keeping his old partner's seat warm. Sterling spent forever next to him calling Yankees baseball. Letting those lines die in a museum somewhere would be the bigger sin. Keep doing it, Michael. It rules every time.
