A quiet, underrated career in the trenches comes to an end

Defensive tackle isn't a position that gets you on magazine covers. It's a job where you eat double teams so a linebacker can make the tackle and get the credit. For 12 years, that was Johnathan Hankins' entire career, and on Thursday he made it official.

The numbers Jordan Schultz laid out tell the story of a guy who just kept working. A 2nd-round pick out of Ohio State back in 2013 (No. 49 overall), Hankins spent his first 4 years anchoring the middle of the Giants' defensive line before cashing in with a 3-year, $30 million deal in Indianapolis. From there it was the Raiders, then the Cowboys, then Seattle, a well-traveled résumé that's basically a badge of honor for a run-stuffer in this league — teams keep calling because guys like this actually work.

This wasn't exactly the ending Hankins probably drew up. He re-signed with the Seahawks last May, but a serious back injury wiped out his entire 2025 season before he ever got on the field. Going out after a lost year isn't the storybook finish, but 169 career games at defensive tackle is a number very few guys ever sniff — that position chews people up.

Hankins was never a Pro Bowl name, never the guy chasing sacks for highlight reels, but ask any offensive lineman who had to block him and you'll get a different answer. Interior run-stuffers like him are the reason linebackers stay clean and running backs get stuffed at the line, the kind of value that shows up in wins more than in stat sheets.

12 seasons, 5 franchises, one Ohio State kid who turned a 2nd-round grade into a career most guys would sign up for in a heartbeat. Not a bad way to close the book.
