Sunday at Muirfield Village turned into exactly the kind of slugfest the Memorial is built for. Ryan Gerard, the 26-year-old grinding for his first PGA Tour win, walked up to the 17th with a chance to take the solo lead and absolutely buried a 40-footer that had the gallery losing it.

That should have been the dagger. Instead it was the setup. JT Poston, who has quietly been hanging around the lead all weekend, answered with a clutch birdie of his own, and Gerard had to scramble for par just to drag the thing into extras. Tie at the top, off to a playoff.

They went back to 18 — a 482-yard par 4 — and traded pars on the first extra hole. No flinching, no giveaways. The kind of playoff where you start wondering if anybody is actually going to win this thing or if they'll just keep grinding pars until the sun goes down.

Second playoff hole is where Poston finally cracked it open. The Postman delivered, Gerard couldn't match, and a guy who was sitting at 140-to-1 on the outright board before the week started walked off Muirfield with his 4th career PGA Tour title — at Jack Nicklaus's tournament, no less. Brutal for Gerard, who was this close to a breakthrough, but a massive moment for Poston.

And then, because golf always finds the soft spot, Poston scooped up his daughter on the green for the trophy interview. Win at Jack's place, hold the baby, hug the caddie, cash the longshot tickets. Hard to script a better Sunday.
