The ruling Nakos is referencing comes from U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney, who granted a preliminary injunction giving Class of 2022 athletes who exhausted their fourth season of eligibility this spring a shot at a fifth year in 2026-27. That decision effectively reopened the door for a handful of players around the country whose careers were thought to be finished, and Ross-Simmons is one of the names now walking back through it.
This isn't a straightforward homecoming, either. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown had already gone on record saying the program wasn't interested in bringing former players back under the new eligibility rules, telling reporters the roster was "pretty full" and that the staff was comfortable with the group it had developed since January. Ross-Simmons reportedly returning anyway suggests something changed — or that he was always going to be the exception.
It's easy to see why Syracuse would make room. Ross-Simmons arrived in Central New York in April 2024 as a Colorado State transfer with real receiving numbers already on his résumé, and he flashed as a big-play option before a finger injury against SMU last October cut into his availability.
