Kamario Taylor still day-to-day as Oklahoma comes to Starkville

TLDR: Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor is still day-to-day for Saturday's game against Oklahoma after missing the 31-0 loss at LSU, so the Bulldogs may need Billy Puckett to start again.

The midweek update didn't settle anything, and for Mississippi State that's a bad sign.

Jeff Lebby didn't add much to it. Asked about his star QB this week, the Mississippi State coach said only that 'the injury report will continue to speak to that,' and then made clear nobody should expect a quick fix: 'He didn't wake up yesterday morning and was healed. It's going to be day-to-day.' The school hasn't officially named the injury. What we do know is that Taylor watched the LSU game from the sideline wearing a boot on his right foot.

Without him, LSU shut the Bulldogs out 31-0. Billy Puckett, a former walk-on from Jackson Prep, made his first career start and went 16-for-26 for 121 yards with no touchdowns and 1 interception. You can't throw that on a backup getting his first real snaps in an SEC road game. Still, it shows how much of this offense depends on Taylor.

And Taylor has been very good. He's completing 66.3% of his passes for 1,450 yards with 17 touchdowns against 4 interceptions, and he's run for 159 yards and another score. He's still No. 7 in On3's Heisman poll even after the injury and back-to-back losses. Mississippi State is 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC, and how the rest of the season goes probably depends on how fast that foot heals.

Oklahoma comes to Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday, October 24, at 2:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network. The Sooners are 3-3 and 1-2 in the SEC, so they're struggling too, and this is a winnable home game if State has its QB. If Puckett starts again, it gets much harder.

Watch the SEC availability report later this week. Lebby has said that's where the answer will come from, so don't expect him to give it away at a press conference. If Taylor goes through a full practice and his name drops off the report, the Bulldogs have their offense back. If not, Starkville gets another Saturday of Puckett.
