College athletics has officially entered its front-office era, and Kansas just made one of the loudest hires yet. Per Pete Thamel, the Jayhawks are bringing in Sam Strantz, currently a member of the Houston Rockets' front office, to be the school's new Executive Director of Front Office Strategy and Operations.
Strip away the title and the job description is pretty simple: Strantz is going to be Kansas's version of a general manager. Thamel described the role as "essentially a centralized general manager for the athletic department," reporting directly to AD Travis Goff. That's not a small distinction. Athletic departments have always had recruiting coordinators, NIL staffers, and compliance people scattered across programs — but a single exec sitting above all of it, treating the department like a front office treats a roster, is still a new idea in college sports.
Strantz's background makes the hire make sense on paper. He's spent time in the Rockets' front office working at the intersection of legal and basketball operations — the kind of role that touches contracts, cap management, and transaction strategy, all skills that translate directly to a world where schools are now writing checks to their own athletes.

The goal, per his reporting, is to build out "a front office model with the objective of adding value to the revenue generating programs" — football and men's basketball, in plain English. In a post-House settlement world where schools can now share revenue directly with athletes up to a cap, the departments that treat roster construction, cap strategy, and contract management like a pro front office are the ones positioning to win the arms race. Kansas clearly doesn't want to get caught flat-footed.
This is part of a broader shift happening across the Power 4 right now. As NIL money and revenue-sharing dollars have turned rosters into something closer to a salary-cap sport, more and more athletic departments have started importing pro-sports front office structures and personnel to manage it — GM titles, cap strategists, contract negotiators, the works. Kansas hiring straight out of an actual NBA front office is about as literal a version of that trend as you'll see.
Whether the centralized GM model actually works in college athletics is still an open question — nobody's run this experiment long enough to know. But Goff clearly believes the department needs someone thinking about football and basketball value creation full-time, the way a pro front office thinks about assets. Expect plenty of other athletic departments to be watching how this plays out in Lawrence.
