That's a small sample, but it tells you exactly what kind of quarterback Kansas is betting on here — someone who extends plays and creates yardage with his feet rather than a proven pocket passer.
Ballard, for what it's worth, wasn't some afterthought. He joined Kansas as a preferred walk-on back in 2023 and is entering his fourth year in the program, and by most accounts he's the better pure thrower of the two. This wasn't a case of the staff picking the obvious guy — it was reportedly a genuinely close call, and Marshall's mobility is what tipped it.
Marshall won a close camp battle with former walk-on Cole Ballard. Marshall will start against LIU on Sept. 4 before hosting Missouri on Sept. 11. Marshall gives OC Andy Kotelnicki the ability to stress defenses.
That mobility matters because of who's calling the plays. Andy Kotelnicki, back with Kansas as associate head coach and passing game coordinator, built his reputation on offenses that stress defenses horizontally and vertically at once — and a quarterback who can tuck it and run gives him another layer to attack with. Pete Nakos of On3 confirmed the same news independently, adding that the move is set to open Kansas' 2026 season. The Jayhawks kick off Sept. 4 against LIU at home before diving straight into the renewed Border War rivalry, hosting Missouri the following week.

Kansas has back-to-back 5-7 seasons on its resume, finished last year on a 3-game losing streak, and actually declined a bowl bid it was technically eligible for. Leipold needs a jolt, and handing the offense to Marshall is the clearest signal yet that the staff wants a different identity under center heading into the Missouri rivalry game and beyond.
