According to Jake Fischer's latest, sources say Leonard himself is operating under the belief the investigation gets resolved before camp opens, and that he's still on track to be a Raptor when it does. That's a notably confident stance for a guy whose situation has been anything but simple lately, and it's the first real signal from Leonard's camp on how he's thinking about the timeline.
The probe itself has real teeth. Investigators have been looking at a 2022 endorsement deal tied to Aspiration, a now-bankrupt green banking company, that allegedly funneled $28 million to Leonard, plus a second, previously undisclosed endorsement arrangement and other expenses the Clippers reportedly covered without being reimbursed. The Clippers have called the accusations absurd, but the league isn't just waving it off, and some reporting has suggested this whole thing could realistically stretch into 2027 if the NBA, the Clippers, and the players' union can't agree on findings or punishment.
That's what makes the trade itself so weird to have in limbo. The framework the two sides agreed to sends Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round swap and two second-rounders to the Clippers for Leonard. The Clippers have said publicly the deal only gets finalized if Raptors ownership agrees to eat any penalty risk tied to Kawhi's contract that could come out of the investigation, which is a lot to ask a front office to sign off on blind.
So for now it's a staring contest. The Raptors already reshaped their roster around the idea of Leonard walking through the door, the Clippers already have Ingram and Dick's names attached to a deal that technically hasn't happened, and everyone's waiting on the league office to say something official.
